embrace the rain
a water pavilion — Delft, the Netherlands

In this landscape architecture studio, I studied the urban ecology of the TU Delft Campus – analyzing its complex water systems, the relation between the campus and its students, and the role that water plays in our everyday life. The result of the collaborative effort between 9 students is a pavilion that materializes the natural cycle of rainwater. A pumping system allows people to bring water from the pond into the cloud through interactio. The cloud, made of a structure of willow branches found on campus and covered with white sheets of fabric, rains the water back into the pond – allowing for the natural growth of plants and a closer understanding of the water cycles that occur in our daily lives.
Throughout the design phase, my responsibility was the structural design of the pavilion and choosing and acquiring materials for construction as well keeping track of finances. As a team, we built the entire pavilion by ourselves in two weeks.
The site model of the entire campus was made by a team of the studio that I was a part of. We made a topographical map of the site, consisting of several layers showing the contours and buildings. The model is laser-cut and modular consisting of 18 parts, scaled 1:2000 and 180 by 90 cm.
