escape route

An urban intervention — Singapore

studio 5 / National University of Singapore

This urban intervention creates places for those living, working, studying, and visiting in Bencoolen Street. The experiental route offers an escape from the busy life and stress of the city. The design consists of a number of follies that are connected like different pieces of a puzzle, each responding to the functions found in the street. Starting with an entrance designed to suck people in, it follows up with a cultural exhibition and café, and finally a community center.

Following the light and gradients of density draw visitors in. The rich facade is made of extruding layers that create different textures when seen from afar and up close; light filters through which changes the space throughout the day.
